At the end of June/beginning of July I visited Quebec province, stopping at various places on a road trip from Montreal, up the St Lawrence river, across the river and back to Montreal again. I decided to test the capabilities of the iPhone and downloaded the application ‘Trails’ to data-log my tracks through GPS. I data-logged my initial walks around Montreal. The image above shows my walk around Old Montreal, to the port area and back again. The details of the streets and the surrounding area when the track is imported into Google Earth are extremely clear. The track is not perfect, it has me walking through the sea at some point, but this could be corrected by changing the settings in ‘Trails’ to log points more often.
The main suprise about using this application was how far I walked each day and realising that the iPhone’s battery can’t always keep up (the application is fairly battery intensive).
Further along my journey, I stayed up in the mountains in the Gaspesie National Park at Gite Mont Albert. There were lots of hiking trails around the hotel and I tracked a few of them. Venturing into the forest, the Google Earth image from the tracks were much less detailed than those of the cities. The forest itself is grainy when the track is zoomed in, and only the main road in is shown. Now through logging these tracks, I now have a map of the area I covered (as can be seen by the image below).
